The LDS church has long operated a highly visible missionary program which has functioned by sending out young men and women to proselyte and bring new converts into the faith.
The problem is that these efforts have been incredibly ineffective and inefficient as convert retention rates have been dismally low. Mormon missionaries have been moderately successful in baptizing new converts but the Church, generally speaking, has been unable to keep these converts around.
